I’m not a massive YouTube browser… but a discovery like this might have be going back for a little more…
Derek Lind is a singer-songwriter from Auckland that I have been listening to since I was a teenager – having first seen him at a lunchtime gig at my high school and many church halls and small venues since… He’s one of those incredibly skilled players and writers who just, well, is. You might not find him on commercial radio, but then the listener is worse-off for it. A supreme talent. Inpsiring.
His last album was a stunner. Now I’m just eagerly waiting for another.
I’m just watching the ‘Farewell to the World’ DVD Crowded House made on the steps of the Sydney Opera house. Thanks, Windows Media Player. And I’m writing a Christmas Letter to the world (no farewells, though); Thanks, Microsoft Word. And also, thanks to some interesting wizardry from the bods at Microsoft, this blog post should miraculously arrive on my WordPress Blog when I press that button up thereā¦
From God to Gilmour. There’s a transition! Anyway.
Being a budding young… ok, rookie guitar player, I am of course forming opinions about players and sounds that I like – absorbing my influences as it were. One of the current ‘most admired’ players is David Gilmour – I wouldn’t be alone in voting his solo in Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ as one of the greatest of all time. I was watching his latest DVD release Remember That Night, the live gig he played at the Royal Albert Hall last year, marvelling at the things he can do with his hands… I think his music, and that of Pink Floyd can have a real emotive quality; a feel that isnt too far removed from the kind of space and emotion I could happily see in a (long) worship service.
Anyway, what inspired me to blog these thoughts was a great website I’ve stumbled upon: It has all the guitar goodies you could ever hope to read about: Gilmourish! Amazing site. It has loads of info about all DG’s gear, style etc. And even a really good page on setting up your own guitar rig. Pretty cool.
There’s a virtual avalanche of sites out there for my main guitar hero, The Edge, but none so far have been quite so, I dont know, nicely designed…
August. The first of August.
A few years ago I had a vision of a band that would be called ‘August’ – ‘to inpsire awe; majestic’ and thought that would be a great name, and a great ‘vision statement’ for a (worship) band. I still have the domain (www.august.co.nz) but as yet, no band. There’s a few songs there, and lots of lyrics…
The years keeping coming, and there’s always August.
Hmmm
